Harvey police found drugs, money and guns in a recent raid

In the summer of 2003, Harvey Mayor Eric J. Kellogg introduced a remarkably successfully and innovative tactic to deter crime: The mayor publicly displays large, prominent signs in front of homes and residences raided for drugs.

The four- by seven-foot signs read: "Harvey Police Department successfully raided this building and found illegal drugs. Anyone found on the property other than the owner will be arrested."

During raids, Harvey police have found more than 10 grams of crack cocain, a shotgun, two marijuana plants, a small amount of marijuana, a digital scale, drug paraphernalia and more.

"These signs are to show the residents of Harvey that this administration is serious about the drug house initiative," Kellogg said. "We have people coming to Harvey from all over to buy drugs. When they see these signs, we are sending a message that they need to keep moving and look elsewhere."

To report a drug house or get involved in the program, please call the Harvey Police Department at 708-331-3030 or the Mayor's Office at 708-210-5300.
