A Harvey officer guards the entrance at Cornett Village In summer of 2003, Harvey Mayor Eric J. Kellogg began an initiative to assist in cleaning up the City streets. As an integral element of the Harvey War on Crime, the introduction of Gated Communities serves to both deter and contain crime.
Kellogg has targeted three areas as a main focus of the Gated Community initiative: Cornett Village, Washington Street, and the corner of 148th and Winchester.
Having spent his own childhood growing up in Cornett Village, Kellogg is personally determined to rid these streets of crime.
"It is imperative to me to make this community safe," Kellogg said.
In Cornett Village, the Mayor, along with the Harvey Street and Police Departments, blocked all but one of the roadways -- both in and out of the Village -- with concrete bartricades and laid speed bumps throughout the interior roadways to slow traffic.
The remaining entrace is monitored via checkpoint by the Harvey Police Department 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At the same time, the interior roadways are monitored by foot. Identification is required from anyone interested in entering the Cornett Village Community.
"We are taking back areas of our community that have been taken over by criminals," Kellogg said. "We will lock down their turf and squeeze them out."
